All of us at Kevin Walsh Motorsports would like to give a huge thank you to everyone who has put forth time, effort, products and sponsorship funding to help us complete the trifecta and capture another Top 10 finish, this time at the San Filipe 250, BC, Mexico.
The car was prepped and ready to go on Tuesday the 9th of March. Kevin Walsh and Shawn Umphries loaded up and headed south of the boarder. After 8 hours riding in the truck, we arrived at Club De Pesca, where we would base our operations for four days. The first three days were filled with final preps and short test drives with about a zillion race day strategies racing through our heads.
With the car all shined up and full of driving gear, we headed to the contingency line Friday morning. This was a pretty painless process until the final SCORE tech inspector informed us that we were due for our annual chassis inspection. Kevin and I had no choice but to pull the entire body off the car in the tech line. Shortly thereafter Mr. Tech Inspector informed us that our chassis had cracks, and was undercut. Our car was built by two of the best chassis builders in the off-road industry, Jamie Campbell and Brian Mathews at Penhall Fab. Removing the body took more time than the actual inspection. Then we were informed that we had to pay $250.00, and it had to be CASH, before the car would be allowed to leave the tech area.
After that we went back to camp and formulated a game plan. We had calculated from previous races that we were getting approximately 10 mpg. The simple math was that our fuel cell held 29 gallons, enough for a 250 mile race. Simple right? Not so much. We must not have had it full, or there was a couple gallons we could not pick up. At mile 239 in the race, the car shut off and wouldn't go any further. We had to make that painful call on the radio to our crew sitting at the finish line. "1646 chase, we are out of gas at race mile 239." Everyone scrambled and got gas cans and headed into the desert to find us. We watched as the time, and a couple class 16 cars, passed by. A beacon of hope pierced the Mexican darkness in the form of the headlights of a class 10 chase team. George waved his flashlight and whistled until they spotted him. Before we knew it they were telling us to get our gear on and they would fuel us.
"1642 chase, we have fuel and are on our way. See you at the finish line." As we booked it down the airport road the lights of the arches loomed in the distance. We made the turn onto the highway and pulled up to a throng of clapping people giving us the thumbs up as a guy waved a checkered flag. Ninth place in a class of 25!
None of this would have been possible without the support of our great sponsors and chase teams.
At Kevin Walsh Motorsports, we hope that these finishes against some of the toughest competitors in one of the toughest environments in the world help you showcase the dedication of your company and the reliability of the parts you stock.
