February 11, 2010 - In what ParkerTech/Lane Automotive alcohol funny car team owner Frank Parker says was strictly a business decision, ParkerTech Racing and Bobby Martin will go in separate directions in 2010. The potent combination of ParkerTech Racing and Bobby Martin produced a U.S. Nationals win, a Division 3 Championship with the Spitzer Cup as a bonus, a Top Ten national finish, and a Division 3 Pro/Sportsman Driver of the Year award in just two seasons.
"We know that in better economic times our track record would translate into sponsorship support. But we just couldn't generate the kind of funding we needed this year to run this operation at a championship level." says Parker. "By no means are we just wishing Bobby Martin the best of luck. We plan to stay in touch and even help him with his own car, if that's the direction in which he goes."
Says Martin, "Frank and Dan are the best." "We're more than partners; we're friends. It's going to be an exciting year for all of us."
"A mutual friend in the sport introduced Brent Henry to us," said Parker. "We talked, and Brent he seemed like the right guy for the job." Brent will drive the ParkerTech/Lane Automotive Charger at five NHRA national events and five Divisional events, starting at Gainesville.
Bobby Martin's immediate future is not certain. Sponsorship is pending, and he will continue to work with the education industry, making appearances as well as seeking other driving opportunities. One thing is for sure, though. He will make his first foray into doorslammer racing behind the wheel of Spike Sterling's "Rush" blown alcohol '33 Willys. The colorful proprietor of Sterling's Auto Body in Steubenville, Ohio, Spike now owns the first door car from the shop of renowned chassis builder Mike Spitzer.
ParkerTech Racing's long-standing relationship with Lane Automotive will continue in 2010. Other returning sponsors are Allstar Performance, Clevite Engine Bearings, Mopar, Aeroquip Hoses, Red Line Oil, NGK Spark Plugs, Total Flow Heads, Mr. Gasket and Mancini Racing.
